April Fool!

A great story in the news today, that Anish Kapoor has designed a 'Hubble Bubble Tower' for the 2012 London Olympics.

Hubble Bubble Tower

Ha! I almost believed it until I remembered it was 1st April - can you really imagine if they built something like that in London?!

I beg your pardon?

The Stuffed Reddit Alien Toy

My girlfriend made me a Reddit Alien for Christmas. Having shared it with Reddit, I was asked a couple of questions, including "how big is it?" and "how did she make it?"

The first question has an easy answer: about 50cm from top to bottom. But just posting that answer would be no fun, so here's a photo of the two most important people in my life for comparison:

UK Domain Registration Tip

If you own a domain portfolio that includes a number of .org.uk or .co.uk domains , remember that V.A.T. will be returning to 17.5% on 1st January 2010, from its current 15%.

If a domain is going to expire within the next 6-12 months, most registrars will let you reregister it now, for another 2 - 10 years. You'll take advantage of the change, and save more than 2% on the price you would have paid.

The more you know ;-)

Surprisingly Honest Spam

When did spammers get so honest?

I've got my own theories about how this happened, but maybe the mystery is part of the fun.

Modern Christmas Songs - and their Music Videos

This is my 2008 selection of Xmas music videos from bands and artists that you never noticed (or would never believe) had released Christmas tracks.

But - don't think this makes them all sell-outs. Although there's some usual Christmas cheese in here, there are also some beautiful songs from accomplished artists such as Tom Waits and James Brown to (ahem) the Kick the Can Crew.

The Republican Dickwad Search

Facebook Lexicon is a tool to let you see trends of how many people are discussing different terms.

Like most people, I was instantly interested to find how many Facebook users had been using the phrase "republican dickwad".

Something Is Wrong with the Internet

Introduction: This article is somewhat UK-centric. I make no apology for this, it's simply that it's where most of my experience lies. In addition, I'm not going to 'name-and-shame' any sites that I don't think are up to scratch. Not right now, anyhow. However, that doesn't mean that I think the sites I do mention are 'Best in Class' examples by any rate, but they all do at least something right. OK, with all that said...

I realized recently, that something was wrong with the internet.

Specifically, that there's a certain number of sites that leave the visitor feeling slightly confused; it's often just a subliminal, unvoiced feeling of discontent with a site, but enough to prevent them from returning. Before I begin, I'm going to make a grand, sweeping statement which you may well disagree with, but that I'll hopefully provide evidence to support.

There are only three types of website, and good sites fall into one, or possibly two, of these categories. Sites that try and sit in all three, or sit in one category but think they sit elsewhere, will rarely achieve success.

New Urban Theme - Init?

urban.ousbey.com

Continuing to experiment with the sNews CMS, I created a new theme for the system. The theme has an urban feel, using paste-up images and a graffiti style logo.

You can now visit urban.ousbey.com to see the theme in action. The site connects to the same database at the main site, so that all the articles and other written content, as well as image and linked audio files do not need to be duplicated.

Audio in sNews 1.6

This is the method I have used to add an audio player to sNews powered sites. It uses the 1pixelout.net MP3 player.

Update: Since writing this article, I have migrated my homepage to the sNews CMS, and you can see the modification working on pages such as Latitude Festival 2007.
